| Despite a slow down in residential real estate and building, western Nevada County continues to see growth in its manufacturing sector. Companies are hiring and expanding. Also, commercial buildings, including those dedicated to office space, continue to be constructed at a fairly steady pace.
Western Nevada County is fortunate to have a tech company history that dates to 1958 with the formation of Grass Valley Group recently renamed Grass Valley (GV). The company became and is still an important supplier of electronic equipment for television broadcasting. It is owned by Thomson, a provider of products for the media and entertainment industries. A network of smaller high tech companies has spun-off from GV and has helped form a highly skilled work force.
The area is also home to a diverse group of companies involved in manufacturing everything from furniture to motorcycle parts, precision glass products, heating elements, wastewater treatment plants, and medical equipment.
Although there have been some retail store closures, others have expanded and new businesses have opened. There are few if any retail spaces available in Downtown Grass Valley, Nevada City or area shopping centers, and some new spaces have been added to the area's inventory.
