Overnight visitors are encouraged to book local accommodations early. Fifteen historic bed & breakfast inns and several spacious and comfortable hotels and motels are located in Grass Valley and nearby Nevada City.

Recapture the spirit of Christmas past amid the charming surroundings of beautiful downtown Grass Valley, an historic mining town, during our 40th Annual Cornish Christmas Celebration. Mill and W. Main Streets will be closed to motorized traffic and filled with the sights and sounds of an old-fashioned Christmas - carolers, gospel music, carriage rides, jugglers professional musicians, children musicians, the Grass Valley Cornish Choir, cloggers, bell ringers, harp music and, of course, Santa Claus.

Handmade arts and crafts from artists throughout California are displayed on streets that become a strollers paradise, while downtown merchants do their part to turn a uniquely historic setting into a living, sparkling Christmas card. Tiny white lights outline the tops of the historical building facades throughout downtown forming a continuos string of twinkles to compliment the clear and starry nights of the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Delicious food and drink can be purchased from a number of fine eating establishments and from specialty food vendors who share the streets with the hand craft vendors and holiday shoppers. In keeping with the traditions of family and community, many of the vendors are local non-profit organizations. Chestnuts roasted over an open fire are offered, compliments of the downtown merchants.

Grass Valley’s downtown is an often overlooked phenomena. One where an historic gold mining town with a tradition of small town atmosphere has challenged the concept of total modernization. It has continued to maintain its charm and livability in a growing urbanized world. The shops although historic, are very up to date in their ability to service locals and visitors alike, with charming arts, clothing, services and food establishments that rival larger more urban areas. The continuation and dedication of a community to its roots is evident and celebrated in the festivals of the town.

Admission is free. Downtown Grass Valley has several free parking lots within two blocks of all the street festivities. There is NO shuttle this year from the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Call the Grass Valley Downtown Association at 530-272-8315 for a free brochure and parking map.
