A Star-Studded Concert featuring nationally-renowned ragtime pianist Tom Brier with the Raspberry Jam Band and Toot Sweet Brass Co., two popular Auburn-based music groups. They will be joined by Sam Williams as the King of Ragtime in "Not Your Father's Chamber Music!" The whole family will enjoy the variety in this program, all the way from Frescobaldi through Scott Joplin, the Roaring Twenties, the Beatles, and Broadway show tunes - covering two centuries of popular music in one afternoon!
The Raspberry Jam Band is a popular instrumental sextet that has become a popular combo in Sacramento, the Sierra foothills and the Bay Area. Based in Auburn, they have been a hit at the Ragtime Corner of the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, the West Coast Ragtime Festival, Music on the Divide in Georgetown, and the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival.
Toot Sweet Brass Co. is a quintet of professional and semi-professional brass musicians. They play contemporary pieces written for quintet as well as Canadian Brass arrangements and a few classics. With their variety of music and their virtuoso interpretations, they demonstrate - as will the entire concert - that this kind of "chamber music" is anything but boring or relaxing!
Guest artist Sam Williams, co-chair of American River College's Theatre and Film department, is an outstanding mime, dancer and music historian. Sam will treat you to a singing and dancing re-enactment of the life and times of Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime," assisted by nationally-renowned ragtime pianist Tom Brier.
