Nevada County Hosts Classic
Fourth of July Celebration
GRASS VALLEY, Nevada County -- A classic hometown parade through historic downtown Grass Valley, a special appearance by Buck Love & The Humperheads, and the Sierra foothills’ premier aerial fireworks highlight a traditional Fourth of July celebration in Nevada County.
The colorful community parade, themed “A New Beginning,” begins at 11 a.m. sharp on Saturday, July 4. The mile-long parade begins at East Main and Auburn streets, moves up Main Street, down Mill Street, across Neal Street and down Church Street to Chapel Street.
The Nevada County Concert Band will perform a 10 a.m. pre-parade concert in the parking lot of Wells Fargo Bank at Mill and Neal streets.
More than 80 entries and several thousand spectators are expected. At least nine marching bands and musical entries, antique vehicles, fire engines, floats, equestrians, politicians and local celebrities will be part of the fun. The popular Ophir Prison Marching Kazoo Band is returning for this year’s parade.
Longtime community leader Ed Scofield, who retired as manager of the Nevada County Fair and is now serving on the Nevada County Board of Supervisors, is being honored as grand marshal of the 2009 Fourth of July Parade.
Parade-goers are advised to bring lawn chairs and arrive early to find a good vantage point.
Following the parade, the fun moves to the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 3 p.m. and entertainment begins at 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and free to youths 12 and under.
All parking, including disabled parking, is at Fairgrounds Gate 4. Parking is $3. Carpooling is recommended.No alcohol, glass, pets, barbecues or personal fireworks may be brought onto the fairgrounds. Shirts are required.
Live music and entertainment, children’s activities, craft vendors, and food and refreshments are scheduled. Sierra foothills musical favorites Buck Love & The Humperheads take the stage at 7:45 p.m. and return for an encore after the fireworks show. The aerial fireworks spectacular blasts off at 9:30 p.m.
The Nevada County Fourth of July celebration is cosponsored by the Grass Valley/Nevada County and Nevada City chambers of commerce and the Grass Valley Downtown Association.
Major underwriters for the Nevada County celebration include Comcast, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, the California State Automobile Association (CSAA), Sierra Nevada Medical Associates, Economy Pest Control, SPD Markets, Budweiser, Rotary, B&C True Value Home Center, The Union newspaper and KNCO radio.
Fourth of July parades in Nevada County are shared by Grass Valley, which hosts parades in odd-numbered years, and Nevada City, which hosts even year parades.
