| The incredible day that the Whopper came out of the Sixteen to One Mine was the best day of the mines history. Glen Knapp and Ernie Locatelli looked forward to their work as they headed down the dark mysterious tunnels that day. The week before the legendary Whopper came out , Ernie and Glen were already excited because they had pulled out seventy ounces of gold. They knew they were on a hot streak of gold.
As they slipped in the last of the explosives, their thoughts were of gold, gold, gold!
Boom! As they walked back, before their eyes lay the largest amount of gold in the mines history. That day they continued to work hard as they pulled out five hundred fifty ounces of gold.
But the most exciting thing about that day was taking the gold out. Twenty ounces, thirty ounces, but then Glen saw a big chunk of gold. Glen said, Please, Please.. Their drill hit flakes of gold and they found the Whopper!
Just how big is the whopper? It weighs eighteen pounds and contains one hundred forty-one ounces of gold. The whopper is 12 3/4" in length by 6 1/2 in wide. The gold is still embedded in the quartz. Its pretty cool.
It was even neater to see it in person. Mike Miller, the president of the Sixteen to One Mine came to our classroom with the Whopper. We missed seeing the Whopper when we went on the field trip to the mine so Mike Miller brought it to our classroom.
As Mike released the Whopper into my hands, they sank down. It was tough to hold it up. It was heavy! The Whopper almost hurt me because the gold was never melted down and there were sharp little bumps on it . I was relieved to hand it over to my classmate..
It was funny to look at it. When we shined the lights on the gold it sparkled in a mysterious way. The white of the quartz and gold went good together. The color was pure, none of the creepy color crayon golds. Here is the QTVR we photographed for all of you to see. Have fun looking at the Whopper. We hope you enjoy seeing it as much as we did. |
