Mt. St. Marys Convent and Chapel
During the l860's the Sisters of Mercy operated an orphanage for the children whose parents had died of illness or in mining accidents.The sisters taught the children in a one room school house at the convent.
Today, Mt. St. Marys is a Grass Valley historical landmark, museum, school, church, and community center. The museum contains many historical artifacts from the gold rush time. There is also a rose garden in the front of the church.
Lola Montez House
Lola Montez bought a home in Grass Valley in l853. She was the teacher of Lotta Crabtree and performed her famous "Spider Dance" in the Nevada City Theater. Lola had doves and a pet bear. She also helped the town's needy and carried food and medicine to injured miners. Today her home is a historical landmark and the location of the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The Holbrooke Hotel
The Holbrooke Hotel was founded in l851. It is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in California. Many famous people can be found in the hotel registers, such as President Grant, highwayman Black Bart, and authors Mark Twain and Brett Harte. Today the rooms of the hotel are decorated with antiques. Each room has been given the name of a famous person who stayed there.
