Placer Placer mining was one of the earliest mining methods discovered by the miners. This type of mining used manual techniques and tools such as sluice boxes, pans, and rockers located near rivers and streams.
Hydraulic Hydraulic mining was the most destructive type, leaving the land unusable as a result. The miners used huge pressure cannon that forced water at the cliffside and washed chunks of rock containing gold from the cliff down into the river where they used placer mining techniques to retreive the gold.
Hardrock A series of shafts or tunnels dug into the earth. This was used to retreive the gold that was buried underneath the earth's surface. The miners were forced to go underground in order to mine in this manner.
