Becoming California, stories from California Gold Rush History

Harry Stewart was elected mayor by the people of Nevada City in 1998, when this website was originally built. He stated that our town is a nice place to visit and a very nice place to live. When people visit Nevada City he wants them to have fun and see all the wonderful sites. He said that one of the advantages of being mayor is that people are friendly and always say hello to him.

The job of mayor is very busy and he spends a lot of time with his duties as mayor. There are city council meetings twice a month and other duties he performs. One of the challenges he faces is working with the small budget of a rural town.

In our interview the mayor stated that the city ordinance for historical buildings helps to protect and preserve the historical district. It is sometimes difficult to maintain buildings that are over one hundred years old and keep them close to original design and condition.

In closing, Mayor Harry Stewart wants people to enjoy visiting and living in the beautiful and historic town of Nevada City, California.
