Recently the Amador-El Dorado-Sacramento-Alpine Unit (AEU) of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has seen a spike in people causing wildland fires while they are trying to create defensible space around their homes. The primary culprits are gas powered weed eaters and lawn mowers.

The McDonald Fire, a lightning-sparked wildfire near the community of Termo in northern Lassen County, grew dramatically yesterday, and now has consumed an estimated 7,000 acres of sagebrush, grass and juniper.

On Saturday, July 17, 2010, the Yosemite Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) held their 37th annual Parents Day at Badger Pass in Yosemite National Park. Parents Day marks the half-way point for teenagers participating in the YCC program at Yosemite, and provides an opportunity for parents to see their children spend the day working in the park. The day is concluded with a barbecue prepared by the YCC kitchen crew and served at a gathering at Badger Pass.

The lightning map provided by the Tahoe National Forest shows 2,241 lightning strikes throughout California, with 1,356 hits in National Forests. Only 23 downstrikes reported for the Tahoe National Forest with no new fires ignited. For the state of Nevada however, the multitude of overlapping strikes is reminiscent of the June 2008 lightning storm.
